Charlie is not a professional writer; do not expect long sentences with flowing dialog and fancy adjectives. Charlie is however an entertaining writer shooting out a barrage of interesting stories and quips he has gleaned over a lifetime of 72 years. There isn't a dull paragraph in the book.Charlie does not attempt to glorify himself with tales of his mountaineering prowess like so many books we read. I would guess he had a hard time deciding if he wanted to go public with the story of his youth. As he describes in the final pages, many institutions and people never forgive a felony, even if it happened 55 years ago.
The first half of the book will surprise many of you as it did me. His comeback from years in prison is truly a remarkable one, a story I found very compelling. I finished this book in a couple of days because I couldn't put it aside for very long.

There was a kind of "I'm reporting on this, but it barely interests me now," feeling as the book continued. It was missing passion as far as I could tell.
In this memoir the author tells of his life before,during and after prison. Here is someone who learned skills that helped him after prison and has overcome obstacles on his way to a full pardon.
While there were some parts I just didn't enjoy as much (his pre-mountaineering life) and some that made me sad (all his failed marriages) I truly enjoyed this book. He is an inspiration to those of us who are over 50 and want to experience the outdoors up close. Great book for teenagers to read also!
Good story and good writing. I would have preferred if it would have told more of the first 'shadow'. Still a good and uplifting story.
What a delightful book! After reading a brief background of his childhood and young adulthood the rest of the book is the attention keeping trips taken to climb the highest peaks on earth. I am sure just a tiny portion is told and I found myself wishing he'd told more. Mountain climbers have to have a good amount of 'crazy' to do what they love to do. I highly recommend "Two Shadows" and thank the author for sharing his story with me.
Anyone who thinks they can't accomplish the simplistic things in life should pick up this book. Charlie has come full circle in his story ending up at triumph! It helped me to overcome struggles in my own life, making me realize I really am only responsible for my own successes & failures, to accept the outcome of my actions & to get up & keep focused on the positive for a successful outcome. Thank you for sharing your story Charlie Winger, you a truly an inspiration! Great read!
It shows man can only bring change if he himself wants to. There are always true friends to be there for you when you need help but they can only help. It is only yourself can bring true success to your life.
I also was glad to see his recommendation for prostrate screening. It can save lives easy.
Lastly, Charlie's adventures are of great interest to any outdoors man. What I valued most about the book is not how high he climbed mountains but how high he has come to hold his head through his life's experiences.
